Arapaima. The largest freshwater fish of South America, the Arapaima is native to the Amazon River. The Arapaima often surfaces for air which makes if especially vulnerable to spear fishermen. Its diet consists of fish, crustaceans and small animals that wander too close to the shore. Commercial fishing has been banned by the Brazilian government and therefore sport fishermen are encouraged to release Arapaima alive if at all possible. |
